Reviews of Christian Marriage Books & Movies

I started reading marriage books to improve the condition of my relationship with my husband. I felt led to write reviews that included how each resource helped my marriage to encourage other couples to use some of these tools to promote growth in their relationships and to give better understanding of what each resource is. I want to urge all husbands and wives to nurture their marriages by choosing the right resources based on their needs.

The Meaning Of Marriage By Timothy Keller – Singleness And Marriage

Chapter 7 – Singleness and Marriage Why does Timothy Keller address singles in a marriage book? “The answer is that single people cannot live their lives well as singles without a balanced, informed view of marriage.” (192) I agree with Keller on this. So many times people, whether single or married, have a distorted view of relationships.  I believe it is important for everyone to educate themselves on marriage, specifically God’s intentions for marriage, whether they get married or not. Keller dives into this chapter by sharing a little historical background on the family unit.  In older cultures it was pressured upon people to get married and have kids so that one would have caretakers in old age and to leave a legacy when they

The Meaning Of Marriage By Timothy Keller – Embracing The Other

Chapter 6 – Embracing The Other This chapter is written by Kathy Keller, TImothy’s wife.  She graciously addresses the often times controversial issue of gender roles in marriage. She begins by stating, “..the differences between men and women will become an unavoidable issue in every marriage.” (170) Every husband and wife enters marriage with some sort of expectation for gender roles, based off how they were raised, other contributing elements in one’s culture such as friends or even television shows, and personal preference. No matter what one’s views are regarding gender roles in marriage, I absolutely agree with Kathy as she points out the truths established in our great design. “In the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. (Genesis

The Meaning Of Marriage By Timothy Keller – Loving The Stranger

Chapter Five – Loving The Stranger Do we all marry strangers? I believe love for another is the main motivator in people willing to commit a life long union in marriage.  However, marriage has its way of revealing more about a person in depth. The question “Did I marry a total stranger?” may cross one’s mind as they are rudely awakened by shortcomings or failures in their spouse, things which could only have been seen after the vows. “We begin to feel that we did not really know the person after all.  And this presents us with the challenge of loving a person who, at the moment, seems in large part a stranger, not the person you remember marrying.” (Keller, 135) Although marriage has its ways

The Meaning Of Marriage By Timothy Keller – The Mission Of Marriage

Chapter Four – The Mission Of Marriage The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.” – Genesis 2:18 The Bible begins by acknowledging that marriage is a friendship.  The entire world had just been created, a marvelous wonder of epic creativity, yet God knew that life would still not be good for man without the element of companionship. God gave woman to man as a gift of companionship. “That is why even in paradise, loneliness was a terrible thing.  That is why we should not be surprised to find that all the money, comforts, and pleasures in the world – our efforts to re-create a paradise for ourselves – are unable

The Meaning Of Marriage By Timothy Keller – The Essence Of Marriage

Chapter 3 Review – The Essence Of Marriage Essence: The most important ingredient; the crucial element. (thefreedictionary.com) Keller explains in this chapter that the most important ingredient in marriage is love.  However, not just passionate, emotional feelings of love, but the commitment and covenant of love derived through actions.   He states on page 78: “But when the Bible speaks of love, it measures it primarily not by how much you want to receive it but by how much you are willing to give yourself to someone else.” The essence of marriage, he says, “is a sacrificial commitment to the good of the other.” (80) In marriage, a husband and wife will go through droughts where they don’t necessarily have passionate love for one another.  They

Book Review – The Meaning Of Marriage By Timothy & Kathy Keller – Chapter 2 – The Power Of Marriage

Chapter 2 – The Power for Marriage Every marriage faces challenges.  This chapter explains why we face challenges and how to get through them without experiencing damage to the relationship.  Keller opens with a passage of scripture: “Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.” – Ephesians 5:21 A person who submits to another out of reverence for Christ is filled with the Holy Spirit.  The Holy Spirit is what empowers that person to humbly serve another.  The power for marriage is the power of the Holy Spirit working within one’s life.  Keller explains on page 51, “Only if you have learned to serve others by the power of the Holy Spirit will you have the power to face the challenges of marriage.” God’s
