God is able to use everything in our lives to teach us more about Him, to draw us in close to Him and to help us mature. Lately, my husband and I recognize how God is definitely using our son to teach us the significance of obedience.
Our son is 2 ½ years old. He is transitioning from a baby to a young boy and his understanding is increasing exponentially each day. We are realizing that our son will learn to obey us depending on if we train and teach him to do so.
And, especially for our young son, obedience is a matter of safety. We want to confidently know that no matter what we say, our son obeys us immediately. That way, in a situation of danger like him running toward a street, we can say stop and he listens. Of course that is just one reason why we have found it is significant for our son to obey us.
Teaching our son obedience requires consistent intentionality throughout the day. Because of this, obedience has been on our minds a ton and God has been speaking to our hearts about our relationship with Him in the matter.
Our son will learn as we lead, and I felt confronted by this, asking myself:
Do we obey God?
Do we obey the commands of His Word?
Our obedience to God is crucial in our ability to lead by example for our children and the legacy we are leaving with them.
With this responsibility weighing on my heart, I was affirmed as I read Day 60 of Devotions For A Healthier You by Katie Farrell. Day 60 is titled The Power of Obedience and Katie shares how there are countless stories in the Bible of people obeying and disobeying God and the impact that resulted. As I read her words, my heart was encouraged to continue to train my child to obey, but more importantly to evaluate and if I am obedient to God and consider the impact my choices in life make.
Katie writes on page 162,
…obedience to God is important because our choices will not only impact our own lives, but they could also have a lasting impact on generations to come. “
It amazes me how God uses so many different things to teach and affirm us. I am thankful for the opportunity to parent, which motivates me to make sure I have a right heart and that I am living for God. I am also thankful for all the resources, written by willing vessels who share God’s truth such as Katie Farrell. My son and her devotional book are both teaching me the significance of obedience right now.
She ends this particular devotion with a prayer that I added here for you to pray along with me. I hope this encourages you as much as it has me.
Jesus, I thank You for Your ultimate act of obedience. You have given Your life so that I could be called a child of God. You are the greatest example I have of how the obedience of One can impact many! Help me follow Your example and obey Your leading in my life. In Jesus’ name, amen! (P.163)
