A Fun & Educational Way To Keep The Family Entertained In The Car | Review

A few days before my family and I left on our vacation in August we received a set of audio stories from Family Audio Adventures. It was perfect timing because the first leg of our trip was three days of driving from Central Oregon to Southern California.review-audio-adventures

We knew we would be spending a ton of time buckled up in the car and we hoped our kids wouldn’t be bored.

Within the first hour of our trip, we slid the first cd into the disk player. We didn’t really know what to expect but looked forward to the adventure. Our son’s eyes lit up with excitement as he heard the story play and we were surprised by how action packed it was.

Our son is 3 and this was his first experience with audio learning. I wasn’t sure if he was too young to be captivated, but he was! Even our 1 year old sat quietly in her car seat as the story played.

The series we listened to was titled “Under Drake’s Flag – The Extraordinary Adventures of G. A. Henty.” Based on historical events, this series told the journey of a young man and his epic adventure with Captain Sir Francis Drake. I don’t want to give it away, but it is fun for the whole family.

Every time we buckled up our kids in the car during our vacation, our son asked to put his story on!

This series was full of action, it was energetic, and it was fun to listen to, even for my husband and I. We found ourselves eager to know what would happen next. I also appreciated the moral values, such as kindness and respect, shared throughout the story between the characters. The world needs more lessons on moral values and I definitely want my kids knowing the importance of having moral values.

The characters also highlighted God and the importance of faith. It was awesome hearing how the story incorporated Christ and the power of prayer.

The amazing part is that this audio series is a history lesson without feeling like a history lesson!

A standout moment for my husband and I was this quote shared in the story, written by Sir Francis Drake in 1577:

Disturb us, Lord, when
We are too pleased with ourselves,
When our dreams have come true
Because we dreamed too little,
When we arrived safely
Because we sailed too close to the shore.

Disturb us, Lord, when
with the abundance of things we possess
We have lost our thirst
For the waters of life;
Having fallen in love with life,
We have ceased to dream of eternity
And in our efforts to build a new earth,
We have allowed our vision
Of the new Heaven to dim.

Disturb us, Lord, to dare more boldly,
To venture on wilder seas
Where storms will show Your mastery;
Where losing sight of land,
We shall find the stars.

We ask you to push back
The horizons of our hopes;
And to push back the future
In strength, courage, hope, and love.

This we ask in the name of our Captain,
Who is Jesus Christ.

What an amazing and relevant prayer even for us to pray today!

The actors did a phenomenal job with different accents and expressing strong emotion. It felt like we were there witnessing all of it take place. I could tell these stories were passionately produced and the quality was not lacking.

The content of the series is more suitable for ages 6 and up, but there was nothing alarming about the content that made me not want to share it with my young kids. I just think it will be easier grasped after 5 years old, than at a younger age. And there are a few parts that could seem scary for sensitive young children. I would advise parents to listen to it prior to giving your children permission to listen just so you know the content well and approve.
